About the Author

Nick Gariaeff is a retired software engineer who worked for IBM for 37 years. He was born in San Francisco in 1946 and graduated in mathematics at Sonoma State College at the end of the 60's. He was interested in blacksmithing and became a certified farrier at Oregon State University.

His interest in photography began at a very early age as a collector of American landscape prints given out by Standard Oil. By the age of nine, he was developing his own photographs. He studied photography in high school and college and has participated in many photography workshops. His biggest influence was Ansel Adams, who he met in 1967. A year later he first visited Bodie and became a devotee ever since.

Nick married his wife, Polly, during the Summer of Love. They have lived in Gilroy, the Garlic Capital of the World, since 1976. They have three children and two grandchildren.
